Math, as we all know is a complicated subject for many kids and even for some adults. In fact, if you would be asking an adult who has difficulty in arithmetic, he will say that math is his weakness when he was studying. If you will also be asking majority of the students studying in a public elementary or high school it is the most feared subject for majority of them.
The question is why? Why do they fear this subject? Probably, most of them got low grades in math or failed the subject at all. There would be reasons why this will be happening, but the main reason is they didn’t understand the basics at all, basics which serves as an important tool for more advanced and complicated math problems.
In my early years in school, I admit that it was quite difficult to learn but with the continuous help and support of my parents, through repetition and continuous practicing I learned it and in some point excelled in the class. I was really lucky for having such patient and hardworking parents but for some who has none to mentor them, they should be doing extra effort to absorb the concepts that the school is teaching them. Otherwise, they should be enrolling to institutions that offer home school tutorials.

This is probably the most detail oriented and comprehensive method that should be implemented to our school curriculum here in the Philippines. It is a proven method that was conceptualized by the government of Singapore in the 1980s to enhance the mathematical abilities of their students which was later on adopted by a number of developed countries like the US, Canada, Israel, and the UK.
According to studies that was conducted in the 90s by an agency that asses mathematical abilities of students, after a conscious effort to improve its curriculum, Singapore’s fourth and eight’ grade students were ranked 1st overall 3 times from other participating countries. So, what’s the secret behind this concept of teaching math?
Singapore math is a three step method that aims to teach every single detail of the subject. The first method is learning basic counting and arithmetic using real life objects like, chips, candies, etc. The second step will be all about Bar models which is a great way to solve word problems. Lastly, all the concepts that they’ve learned from the 1st step and 2nd step will be integrated to step 3 where numbers and symbols are used.
